The Girls Education Initiative of Ghana (GEIG) provides academic and financial support for girls and applicants with special needs so that they can access higher education and professional opportunities.

GEIG aims to transform the lives of young women in Ghana, improve development and also reduce poverty in the country by offering higher education and professional opportunities to an untapped source of talent.

GEIG has 3 core programme areas namely:

1. GEIG Learns
2. GEIG Leads
3. GEIG Serves

Every year as part of the GEIG Learns programme, summer vacation classes are organised for three weeks with a partner institution which provides classroom facilities and sometimes accommodation. Selected students for the programme receive the necessary corrective classes and workshops to ensure smooth academic transition to Junior High School (JHS).

This year’s group consisted of 4 girls from the Greater Accra Region and 10 girls from the Ashanti Region.

Lancaster University Ghana has partnered with GEIG for two editions so far, with the first one in 2015 and the just ended edition this year. This year, LUG supported this initiative by providing learning spaces on our campus for all the 3 weeks. Additionally, the cohort was provided with daily transportation from their hostel to campus and on trips to Elmina Castle, Kakum National Part and Nzulezu.

LUG also supported by providing 3 tutors for the classes namely Sir Francis Nutsugah (Maths); Andrews Nii Awuley Lartey (Coding and ICT) and Kwabena Osei Bonsu (English Language).

The programme ran from the 1st till the 21st of August, and included daily classes in Maths, French, English, Social Studies, Coding, ICT and Science from 9am till 2:45 pm. Enrichment activities included Reading Club, Bead-making, Game Time (Chess, Scrabble and Ludo) and trips to Kakum National Park, Elmina Castle and Nzulezu.
