One of our alumnus has recently began his LL.M. studies at the University of Michigan Law School as a recipient of the prestigious Michigan Grotius fellowship. Alfred Momodu LL.B’17, until recently spent a year working as a teaching and research assistant with our Law Department.

The Grotius Fellowship is awarded to several particularly exceptional LLM students and research scholars. Named after Hugo Grotius, the seventeenth century Dutch jurist generally regarded as the father of modern international law, the fellowships acknowledge superior academic and professional achievement in all areas of law and recognize the promise of a distinguished legal career following graduate study.

Speaking on his journey to Michigan and time with us at Lancaster, Alfred Momodu had this to say:

“I am extremely elated and privileged to be joining this most prestigious institution. What is particularly different about the Michigan LL.M is its small class size. On an average, only around 35 candidates are admitted every year from an estimated pool of 700+ applicants. To be part of this exclusive group of brilliant legal minds is humbling and inspiring. I am not unaware of the expectations that this achievement has wrought. I am nonetheless steadfast in my resolve to achieve academic excellence as best as I can. On the other hand, something that I think is particularly noteworthy is that my fellowship serves to reinforce what I already knew to be true; that a Lancaster degree is a global door opener, and is respected amongst the elite institutions of the world.”

The Law School at the University of Michigan is ranked amongst the top 8 in the United States and top 20 in the world. The University has produced several US Supreme Court Justices, senators and world leaders including former United States President Gerald Ford. Historically speaking, the Law School at Michigan awarded its very first LL.M. degrees in the 1889-1890 academic year and that is a tradition that Alfred will become immersed in during his time there. We at Lancaster Ghana wish Alfred all the best and hope to continue to celebrate his successes in the future.
